UNDERSTAND YOUR FRAMING
The backbone of your deck, framing provides crucial strength and stability. Discover the best materials and techniques to ensure a solid, lasting foundation for your outdoor living space
For the classic wood deck, we exclusively use YellaWood® brand pressure-treated pine. This specially treated lumber is designed to withstand the elements, offering long-lasting protection against rot, decay, and insects. Its micronized copper treatment results in a more natural wood appearance, making it easier to paint or stain to your preference. This option offers timeless beauty but requires regular maintenance to preserve its look.
PRESSURE TREATED FRAMING

YELLAWOOD®
YellaWood® is a leading brand of pressure-treated pine decking, known for its reliability, widespread availability, and advanced treatment process. It's a popular choice for homeowners who want the natural beauty and affordability of real wood, combined with long-lasting protection against the elements.

Pressure-treated pine is an excellent and cost-effective material, but as a natural wood product, it behaves differently than composite or PVC. Understanding these characteristics is key to a successful project and long-term satisfaction.
1. Natural Wood Characteristics
Because it is real wood, every board is unique. You must expect:
-
Checking (Splitting): As the wood dries and is exposed to weather, small cracks (called "checks") will appear on the surface. This is a normal and natural part of the aging process and does not typically affect the structural integrity.
-
Warping & Cupping: Wood moves as it absorbs and releases moisture. While YellaWood® is a high-quality pine, some boards may twist or cup over time.
-
Knots: As a natural pine product, your boards will have knots, which contribute to its rustic appearance. Lumber is available in different "grades" (e.g., #1, #2, Prime) which determine the size and frequency of knots.
2. Maintenance is Required
This is the most critical point. Your deck is protected from rot and termites, but it is not protected from weather. Sun and rain will cause the wood to fade to gray, split, and splinter if you don't maintain it.
-
Cleaning: The deck should be cleaned annually with a deck cleaner to remove dirt, mold, and mildew.
-
Sealing/Staining: You must apply a high-quality water repellent, stain, or sealer. This is what protects the wood from moisture and UV rays, minimizes splitting, and maintains its color.
